For the past 29 years, children, families and youth have looked to the Zimmer Children’s Museum & youTHink by ShareWell for innovative play, arts-based learning experiences, and cutting edge programs that teach social justice, diversity and how to meaningfully contribute to the greater good. In this time, we have helped more than 25,000 middle and high school youth find their voice, cultivate a social conscience, and make a positive impact in their communities. Over 1,000,000 visitors have been to our museum. They have flown our airplane around the globe, dressed up as first-responders in our Aid and Rescue Center, and made new friends on our Main Street.
As we approach our 30th year, we look to our future, and have begun a major transition that will enable us to reach a larger audience and serve our community more extensively. In 2019, ShareWell’s children’s museum will move from its current home on Wilshire Boulevard to the rooftop of Santa Monica Place. The museum will be renamed The Cayton Children’s Museum by ShareWell, in commemoration of a generous gift from Barry and Andrea Cayton. The Caytons have a long, philanthropic history of giving back to the community, and we are thrilled they have chosen to champion our transformation.
The new Cayton Children’s Museum by ShareWell will offer an expanded footprint of 21,000 square-feet (beyond our current location’s 14,000), and is located where the EXPO line meets the Santa Monica Pier. The Cayton will provide everything your families love about the current location…plus more classroom space, extended museum hours, a larger gift shop, designated stroller parking, lockers, and access to ample parking, public transportation, shopping, and restaurants. Our exhibits and programs will be expanded and modernized, while focusing on our abiding mission of “playing our way to a better world”. A major tourist destination, our Santa Monica home will also position us as ambassadors of kindness and wonder to visitors from beyond our Los Angeles community.
This next chapter in our evolution is the most significant step for our organization, since the Jewish Federation welcomed us at 6505 Wilshire Boulevard, 18 years ago. We are grateful to the Federation’s support over the years, which helped position us to take this next step.
We look forward to sharing our new home with you all—see you in Santa Monica at the Cayton Children’s Museum by ShareWell!
